Key facts
Baja California follows the United States’ daylight saving calendar, so Tijuana’s clocks always match San Diego’s. In 2026 they moved forward on March 8 and move back on November 1, the same days as California. Meetings, school schedules and shift work line up across the border.
Most commuters cross northbound at San Ysidro (closest to Zona Río and downtown) or Otay Mesa (closest to the airport and the eastern industrial parks). A third port, Otay Mesa East, is under construction; SANDAG and Caltrans have said the goal is to open it in late 2027, in phases.
Wait times change a lot by hour, day and lane. Before you commit to a neighborhood, check the live and historical waits on CBP’s Border Wait Times site at the hours you would actually cross.
| Option | Who can use it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| General lanes | Anyone with valid entry documents | The longest waits at peak hours. |
| Ready Lane | Vehicles where everyone over 16 has an RFID card: US passport card, enhanced driver’s license, Border Crossing Card, permanent resident card or a trusted traveler card | A passport book alone or a REAL ID license does not qualify. |
| SENTRI | Pre-approved, low-risk travelers who pass CBP’s background check and interview | Dedicated lanes for vehicles and pedestrians; you apply through CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs. |
The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) is a pedestrian bridge that links a terminal on the San Diego side directly to Tijuana International Airport, so passengers can cross without going through a road port of entry. It opened in December 2015. For people who live in Tijuana, it also works the other way: the airport is a short drive from Otay and Zona Río.
Our Tijuana area guide covers the city in more detail.
According to the president of AMPI Tijuana, quoted by El Imparcial in January 2026, rents in Tijuana ranged from about US$500 to US$2,000 a month: from around US$500 in the east and southwest, from about US$900 in central areas, and up to US$1,000–2,000 in high-end areas. For buyers, the Banorte housing price index put Baja California’s average at about MXN 40,688 per square meter in June 2026.
Travel advisories change and are written at the state level. Read the current advice from the US State Department or the Government of Canada, and ask us about the specific streets and developments you are considering: we work in these neighborhoods every day and will tell you what we know.
Yes. Baja California follows the US daylight saving calendar, so Tijuana and San Diego share the same clock all year.
Not with a passport book alone. Ready Lane requires an RFID-enabled card, such as a US passport card or an enhanced driver’s license, for everyone in the vehicle over 16.
SANDAG and Caltrans have stated a goal of opening it in late 2027, in phases. Check SANDAG’s updates for the latest timeline.
